What is Matcha?

Matcha has been around for centuries, and there’s little wonder that its popularity has trickled down from Eastern cultures onto the shelves, menus and into the homes of Western ones. Traditionally consumed as part of Japanese tea ceremonies and by Buddhist monks. Who know a good thing when they see one. South Africa is embracing Matcha, and it’s all about quality, which we are harnessing straight from the green rolling hills of Kyoto, Japan. The birthplace of miraculous Matcha, in essence.

Organic Grade and Ceremonial Grade Matcha both share the same unique characteristics: 100% organic, shade covered, steamed, air-dried, de-stemmed and stone ground. Contains no artificial colors, preservatives or additives, is sugar-free, gluten-free and certified kosher and halaal. This “green gold” is highly concentrated, so you only need ½ to 1 teaspoon (+-2g) per serving. The antioxidants are up to 137 higher, and such a little is needed for such strong benefits.

In a nutshell

Chlorophyll and amino acids, both contribute towards its distinctive taste. These clever acids, birthed from mother nature’s golden rays of sunlight contribute to what is known as the fifth taste, or umami.  This is characterized by a rich, creamy mouthfeel. Matcha, made in the traditional Japanese style, whisked with water, is a full-bodied green tea with an initial astringent taste. Which is followed by a lingering sweetness. The intensity of the experience compares to one’s first taste of dark chocolate or red wine. When added as an ingredient, the taste of matcha becomes noticeably subtle. Matcha contains L-theanine, an amino acid known to relax the mind and brings about a calm alertness.
